The 2nd Leg of the RSC Challenger Series is finally here! Kindly read the event mechanics and registration link below.

REGISTRATION PERIOD: March 24 until April 06 only.

*Participants who availed the Bundle Promo during the STRIDER event (Leg 1) are no longer required to register manually. Kindly send us a private message (via FB or IG) to declare your readiness to participate in this event.

CHALLENGE PERIOD: April 07 until June 14 only.

*The original end date (June 07) was extended by 7 days to allow runners to finish, consolidate, and upload their runs before the last awarding day of the Leg 2 event.

EVENT MECHANICS

1. The main objective of the event is to enable and encourage participants to reach different locations through running.

2. To achieve the PATHFINDER patch, a runner must accomplish ONE of the following:

OPTION A: Complete a total raw mileage of 250 KM.
OPTION B: Complete a minimum of 230 KM in raw mileage and obtain the required Area Points (AP) to reach 250 KM.

3. Each Area Point (AP) is equivalent to one (1) bonus kilometer added to a participant’s total mileage (1 AP = 1 KM).

4. Runners who opt to complete the PATHFINDER using a combination of raw mileage and Area Points must accumulate sufficient AP to reach a total of 250 KM.

Example # 1: 240 KM (raw mileage) + 10 AP = 250 KM
Example # 2: 230 KM (raw mileage) + 20 AP = 250 KM
Example # 3: 245 KM (raw mileage) + 5 AP = 250 KM

5. Different PATHFINDER locations grant varying AP bonuses. Refer to the list below:

Marikina Freedom Park > UP Oblation, Quezon City = 2 AP
Marikina Freedom Park > Le Blanc Hotel, Antipolo City = 3 AP
Marikina Freedom Park > EDSA Shrine, Pasig City = 2 AP
Marikina Freedom Park > Timberland Heights, San Mateo = 4 AP
Marikina Freedom Park > Araneta Coliseum, Quezon City = 2 AP
Marikina Freedom Park > Ayala Triangle, Makati City = 3 AP
Marikina Freedom Park > Luneta Park, Manila City = 4 AP

*For example, if a runner starts at Marikina Freedom Park and finishes at the U.P. Oblation, with a recorded distance of 10 KM, they will receive a 2 AP bonus. The total PATHFINDER mileage for that run will be 12 KM (10 KM + 2 AP).

6. Each area awards bonus mileage based on the effort required to reach that location. The maximum number of Area Points that may be accumulated for the PATHFINDER event is 20 AP.

7. To qualify for an AP bonus, all runs must START at Marikina Freedom Park. Any run that DOES NOT START at Marikina Freedom Park will NOT be eligible for the AP bonus.

8. A runner may earn Area Points from each designated location only ONCE. Repeating Area Points is not allowed.

9. First-time participants (without a STRIDER patch) must follow the mileage mechanics of the STRIDER event. The PATHFINDER mechanics apply only to participants who already have a STRIDER patch. First-time participants will NOT be allowed to register in both events simultaneously.

10. For questions and inquiries, please message our official Facebook and Instagram accounts.

REGISTRATON LINK: https://forms.gle/fYEoJDpXyNNUtxR16

The 15th edition of this annual event continued its legacy as a dedicated platform for first- and second-time marathoners, emphasizing guided training, inclusive community ties, and the achievement of the coveted 42.195-kilometer distance.

Among the participants, the club delivered another standout performance, successfully maintaining its perfect streak of producing marathon finishers every year. Every participating club member who started the race successfully crossed the finish line. They described the race results as a testament to their training commitment, highlighting months of progressive mileage and consistent accountability that allowed them to compete with both confidence and competence.

Individual honors within the club went to Igi Osuna of #MarathonProject, who finished first among the male members, while Diane Castro of #RunningDivision led the female contingent across the finish line.

While the Filinvest circuit is celebrated for its lush greenery and master-planned “garden city” atmosphere, it remains widely regarded by the local running community as a deceptively technical course. Defined by its “rolling” topography, the route presents steady inclines that frequently disrupt a runner’s rhythm, demanding high cardiovascular endurance and strategic pacing. The complexity of the Sunday race was further heightened by the sudden downpour of rain & shifts in temperature. These factors delivered a grueling test of strength and endurance to participants as they neared the final stages of the marathon.

Despite the persistent rain showers and the long, grueling hours of the event, the spirit of the RSC community remained steadfast. Large groups of club members & family members flocked to the course to cheer and provide a much-needed motivational and logistical support. Our RSC members braved the rain to ensure that the club participants felt their support at every loop, turning the damp morning into a vibrant display of camaraderie in the running community.

As the TBR Dream Marathon 2026 concludes with a record-breaking field, it reaffirms its status as a transformative force in the local running scene. By providing a structured and supportive environment, it continues to turn the ambitious dream of becoming a marathoner into a reality for everyday runners.

Congratulations to all TBR Dream Marathon 2026 finishers!

In the Philippines, running often grows out of everyday life rather than formal competition. It happens on barangay roads at sunrise, on quiet streets before traffic builds up, or in parks during weekend mornings. For many working professionals who are new to running, the goal is rarely speed or trophies. It is about personal wellness, fitness, and curiosity.

“How far can I run if I stay consistent and smart about my training?”

Understanding what each distance demands, how long it takes to prepare, and what type of training works best helps runners progress safely while still enjoying the process. It’s also crucial to consider our climate. Heat, humidity, and unpredictable weather affect how your body handles effort, hydration, and pacing, and these factors can change the experience of running every distance.

3K Category: 2-4 weeks | 0 taper week

A 3K is usually the first distance where running feels intentional. The effort is short, but in humid conditions it can feel intense if pacing is off. Training should be simple and mostly aerobic, with easy runs where breathing stays controlled. Because the distance is short, a small amount of speed work helps, such as short accelerations or relaxed intervals once a week. These are not about pushing limits, but about learning how to move efficiently at a slightly faster pace while staying comfortable. In hot or humid mornings, 3K is often more manageable because the run is short, but even so, runners should adjust their pace and hydrate properly.

5K Category: 3-5 weeks | 0-1 taper week

The 5K is where running starts to feel like a habit rather than a casual activity. Most working professionals can handle this distance comfortably. The Philippine heat makes pacing especially important here, so most runs should remain easy and aerobic. One structured session per week, such as short intervals or a slightly faster steady run, helps improve rhythm and efficiency. At this stage, about 70 to 80 percent of training should feel easy, allowing the body to adapt without accumulating unnecessary fatigue. Choosing the right time of day is key in tropical conditions, as even a short 5K can feel much harder under midday sun.

10K Category: 6-8 weeks | 1 taper week

A 10K represents a clear step into endurance running. Weekly mileage becomes more important than speed. Most training should focus on aerobic runs, including one longer run each week. Speed sessions become less about fast bursts and more about controlled effort. Tempo-style runs, where the pace feels challenging but sustainable, are more useful than high-intensity intervals. The tropical climate becomes more noticeable here, so early-morning runs are preferable, and hydration before and after the run is essential. Runners should plan their routes to avoid direct sun exposure, as fatigue can increase quickly under humid conditions.

16K Category: 10 -12 weeks | 1 taper week

At 16K, running becomes a true long-distance commitment. Training is now heavily aerobic, with long, easy runs forming the foundation. Speed work becomes optional and minimal, often limited to short strides to maintain good running form. Steady runs at a comfortable pace help build mental focus and physical durability. In the Philippines, the climate plays a major role in choosing routes and times. Shade, wind, and avoiding the hottest part of the day can make the difference between an enjoyable 16K run and one that leaves you drained or dehydrated. Learning to pace yourself and adjust effort according to temperature is critical at this distance.

Preparation requires consistency despite work and family responsibilities. Training is overwhelmingly aerobic, with easy runs and long runs making up most of the schedule. Tempo runs play an important role, teaching runners how to manage effort as fatigue slowly builds. High-intensity speed work is largely unnecessary for runners focused on completion and enjoyment. Recovery becomes just as important as training, particularly in humid weather. For half marathons in the Philippines, runners should also consider the climate when choosing races. Cooler months or morning events are preferable to reduce the risks of overheating or early fatigue.

42K Category: 20 -28 weeks | 2-3 taper weeks

The 42K marathon distance stands apart in terms of difficulty and respect. Even runners approaching it purely for personal fulfillment require a very long preparation. Training is almost entirely aerobic, centered on long runs, easy recovery runs, and consistency over months. Speed work is very limited and carefully controlled, often included only as short strides to maintain efficiency. In the Philippine climate, managing heat, humidity, and hydration is absolutely critical. Long-distance races in mid-morning or afternoon can be extremely taxing, so planning runs for early mornings and training under similar weather conditions can help the body adapt. The marathon is less about physical speed and more about patience, discipline, and mental resilience.

Preparation is key to athletic success. Running is an enjoyable sporting event, but one must always err on the side of caution when aiming for longer distances. It is important to allow yourself to build progressively and safely. This ensures not just your enjoyment in participating but also maintains longevity in this sport.

PHOTOS BY: Michael Mayo

The off-season is the perfect time to shake things up, give your joints a break, and explore activities that keep your body strong and your mind fresh. There are many fun ways to stay active that also build endurance, strength, and coordination, giving you a head start when the season kicks off again. Think of it as cross-training with a twist: keeping your legs moving while avoiding the same old treadmill or road routine.

Hiking: Low-Impact Fitness With Big Returns

Hiking is a surprisingly powerful way for runners to maintain fitness during the off-season. The steady movement and natural elevation changes work your cardiovascular system without the repetitive pounding of the pavement. It is the perfect option when your legs need a break but you still want to keep your aerobic base strong. According to the National Park Service (2023), hikers often return to their running routines with improved endurance and a stronger foundation for the season ahead.

Hiking also strengthens muscles runners rely on most. Uphill climbs engage the glutes, hamstrings, and calves, while uneven terrain challenges your core, balance, and ankle stability. These are areas that road running alone often neglects. The result is better overall coordination, improved running mechanics, and a smoother transition back into structured training (American Council on Exercise, 2022).

Beyond the physical benefits, hiking offers a mental reset. Escaping pace targets and mileage goals allows runners to enjoy movement in a more relaxed, natural environment. Time spent outdoors has been shown to lower stress and boost mood, which can leave athletes returning to training more motivated and mentally refreshed (American Psychological Association, 2021). Hiking is more than just exercise. It is a full-body and mind reset that sets you up for a strong season.

Cycling: Endurance, Strength, and Precision

Cycling is a favorite off-season tool for runners and it is easy to see why. Long, smooth rides build cardiovascular endurance while taking pressure off your joints. This low-impact approach keeps your aerobic system in shape, so when you return to running, your legs feel fresher and your lungs stronger (National Institutes of Health, 2022).

The benefits go beyond the cardio. Cycling strengthens the quadriceps, glutes, and calves, enhancing power and muscular endurance that translates directly to running performance. According to the American College of Sports Medicine (2021), this combination of strength and aerobic work helps runners climb more efficiently, maintain form late in long runs, and correct muscle imbalances that can develop from repetitive running.

Cycling also provides a unique opportunity to refine cadence and leg turnover. Adjusting gears and pedaling rhythm on flat stretches or rolling hills can simulate aspects of running form without the impact. Based on the American Council on Exercise (2021), this practice improves leg efficiency and coordination, offering benefits that carry directly over to running economy once you hit the road again.

Racket Sports: Fun, Fast, and Functional

Badminton and tennis are not just recreational. They are highly effective cross-training tools for runners. Both sports involve short bursts of speed, rapid changes in direction, and periods of active recovery, delivering a cardiovascular workout that complements a runner’s aerobic base without pounding the joints. According to the American College of Sports Medicine (2021), incorporating racket sports into your off-season routine can help maintain fitness while keeping training fresh and engaging.

Quick sprints, lunges, and jumps strengthen the lower body while promoting joint and connective tissue resilience. Based on research from the National Institutes of Health (2022), this type of low-impact strength and endurance training helps prevent overuse injuries and maintains performance throughout the season.

Beyond fitness, the agility and coordination required in badminton and tennis sharpen neuromuscular control. The rapid lateral movements, directional changes, and explosive efforts engage stabilizing muscles that runners may overlook. Combining endurance, strength, and coordination, racket sports offer a full-body off-season workout that keeps athletes strong, balanced, and ready to hit the ground running.

Written by: Yanyan Morrondoz

The momentum has carried into 2025, as marathon events continue to proliferate across the Philippines. It’s clear evidence that the country’s “running era” is not only strong but consistently accelerating. This sustained surge has also inspired a new wave of first-time runners, many of whom are now setting their sights on completing one of the sport’s most celebrated milestones: the marathon.

But before you jump into the whole “marathon journey” trend you see on social media, consider 3 things first.

1. The N+1 Rule

At RSC, we follow a simple guiding principle for beginner marathoners: if you’re a fresh runner who just thought of doing your first marathon this year, do it next year. While it’s possible for a new runner to finish a marathon within their first year of running, the difference in preparation quality between those who rush and those who give themselves an extra year is hugely significant. That additional time allows for gradual mileage buildup, stronger connective tissues, improved running economy, and the development of consistent training habits, all of which lay a safer, more effective foundation for marathon success.

Base mileage is the cornerstone of marathon preparation. It drives the aerobic and musculoskeletal adaptations essential for endurance, from increased mitochondrial density to enhanced fatigue resistance. This takes a long and arduous process. While some gains can be made in a few months, they cannot match the cumulative adaptations developed over a year or more of consistent running. Experience matters too, not just the lessons learned about pacing, fueling, and race-day strategy, but also the progressive adaptations your body undergoes with consistent, long-term training.

Give yourself a year to grow first and find your way into the sport.

2. Beginners Must Commit At Least 4 Days a Week… for 7 Months

For recreational runners, juggling a marathon goal with work, family, and personal commitments is often the biggest challenge. Determination, grit, and dedication are easy to talk about, but when life gets busy, marathon training can quickly slip down the list of priorities. It’s still important, but rarely the most important thing.

Building a good aerobic foundation alone for beginners takes at least 12-16 weeks of consistent training to develop performance-level adaptations in the long term. That doesn’t include the other phases of development yet. Extending the preparation period allows for gradual increases in weekly mileage and long-run distances, provides room for mistakes, reduces injury risk, and ensures your body is ready for the demands of 42 kilometers. You also have to account for the possibility of getting sick and allotting a recovery period before returning to play. Seven months strikes the right balance, enough time for your aerobic system to optimally develop while leaving room for safe, progressive marathon training.

Their prior mileage, neuromuscular conditioning, and developed aerobic base provide a reliable platform for efficient marathon preparation.

For true beginners, however, the equation is different. Without an established endurance baseline, they generally require a longer, more progressive training horizon to minimize injury risk, build durability, and develop the physiological adaptations necessary for marathon performance.

In short: experience shortens the runway; beginners need the full length.

Plan to run at least four days a week. While some programs suggest that three days can suffice, that represents the bare minimum to see meaningful development. Progress will be slower, building mileage safely becomes harder, and preparation remains limited. Training at the bare minimum almost guarantees bare-minimum results.

Attempting a marathon with minimal preparation is essentially a gamble with your body. Without sufficient mileage, strength, and endurance, every long run and every kilometer on race day carries a heightened risk. You might finish the race, but injury, burnout, or a miserable experience becomes more likely. Proper preparation does not eliminate all risks, but it dramatically reduces them. Skipping that work is like running with the deck stacked against you.

3. You Have an Emotionally Strong “Why”.

Running a marathon is as much emotional as it is physical. Emotions drive motivation, and motivation drives consistent actions. Consistent actions lead to a stronger sense of discipline and grit.

Your legs, lungs, and heart can be trained, but without a deep, emotionally charged reason for ‘WHY” you are doing it, motivation will fade when the miles get long and the early mornings feel impossible. Your WHY is more than a goal; it is the emotional fuel that strengthens your mental state and powers your consistency, resilience, and determination. Emotions drive motivation, and motivation drives you to pursue a goal relentlessly. When you connect deeply to your why, your mind becomes stronger, helping you push through fatigue, discomfort, and doubt.

It could be proving to yourself that you can overcome limits, honoring a loved one, or transforming your life through running. It could be social, like joining a community of like-minded runners or raising awareness for a cause that matters to you. Whatever it is, it must resonate with your emotions. The emotional connection turns abstract goals into urgent, actionable purpose, giving your mental state the energy to endure the toughest parts of training and race day.

Sports psychology research shows that athletes with a clear, emotionally resonant “why” perform better, stick with training longer, and recover more effectively from setbacks. For marathoners, a strong “why” helps you endure the late miles, maintain focus, and cross the finish line even when every step feels heavy.

Ultimately, running a marathon is about more than accumulating miles. It is about establishing a strong training foundation, committing to a realistic schedule, and connecting deeply with the purpose that drives you. When these three elements come together, you not only maximize your chances of crossing the finish line but also transform the entire journey into a meaningful experience. A marathon challenges your body, your mind, and your resolve, and when you are fully prepared, it becomes less about enduring 42 kilometers and more about discovering what you are truly capable of achieving.

WRITTEN BY: Yanyan Morrondoz
PHOTOS BY: Michael Mayo

Advice like that can sound smart, but it’s often taken out of context.

Context is very crucial. The 80/20 principle isn’t wrong. it’s just often oversimplified.

The rule came from studies of elite endurance athletes, not everyday runners. These are people who train twice a day, cover over 100 kilometers a week, and have access to professional coaching, recovery, and nutrition. For them, easy mileage is what keeps them strong enough to handle all the hard workouts that follow. In elite sports, volume is king.

Exercise scientists Stephen Seiler and Espen Kjerland (2006) studied how world-class athletes train. They found that most of their workouts were done at an easy effort, with only a small amount of high-intensity running. But here’s the catch: that was an observation, not a rule. The athletes weren’t aiming for an exact 80/20 split; that’s just how their training naturally balanced out.

For regular runners who only train three or four days a week, copying that same ratio doesn’t always work. A study by Stöggl and Sperlich (2014) found that while the 80/20 pattern (also called “polarized training”) helps elite athletes improve, runners with lower mileage often make better progress with a mix of easy and moderate-intensity runs. In simple terms, if you only run a few times a week, you don’t need to spend almost all of it running slowly. You need a smart mix that fits your schedule and helps you recover.

At its core, running is about finding the right balance between stress and recovery. Hard workouts like intervals, tempo runs, and hill repeats push your body to get stronger and faster. Easy runs, on the other hand, help you recover, build endurance, and reduce the risk of injury. If you run too hard too often, you’ll burn out. If you always stay too easy, your progress will stall. The best results come when you find your own version of balance. That’s your personal 80/20.

Coach Matt Fitzgerald, one of our mentors at 80/20 Endurance school, brought the idea to everyday runners through his book 80/20 Running (2014). His message was simple: take your easy days truly easy so you can crush your hard workouts. It’s a great principle, but even Fitzgerald points out that it needs to be adjusted for your level and training load. The same goes for Jack Daniels, one of the most respected coaches in the sport. In Daniels’ Running Formula (2013), he reminds runners that structured, purposeful training, not chasing ratios, is what leads to real improvement.

If you’re a beginner running two or three times a week, it’s smart to keep most runs easy and focus on building consistency. Once you start running three to four times a week, try adding one harder session, one long run, and a few easy runs. For more experienced runners training five or more days a week, that’s when the 80/20 rule really starts to make sense. The more you run, the more easy mileage you need to stay strong and recover.

In the end, there’s no one-size-fits-all rule. The best running plan is the one that fits your life, your experience, and your goals. Training smarter means knowing where you are now, not where an internet formula says you should be.
